Applying for Admission

Before Hunter students can declare a School of Education major or minor, they must apply to the School of Education and be accepted. The School of Education application is open to current Hunter students throughout the year, and can be accessed online through the School of Education website. Students interested in an Education program should apply as early as is possible in the semester prior to the one in which they plan to enroll. Transfer students should seek advisement about applying to the School of Education as soon as they have been admitted to Hunter. Transfer students who have a GPA of at least 3.5 may apply to start an Education program in their first term at Hunter.

All applicants must complete an on-site writing test to assess written English skills, as well as participate in a group interview with other students and School of Education faculty members.  Accepted students will declare both an appropriate major in the School of Arts & Sciences, and a major or minor in the School of Education.  

The undergraduate music education program requires a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5. Candidates for BA/MA programs must also receive approval for graduate-level study by the relevant department in the School of Arts & Sciences. The School of Education does not accept nondegree or second-degree students. Meeting minimum admission requirements does not guarantee entry into the program.

Admission Requirements

1. Minimum of at least 65 credits but no more than 90 credits.

2. A Hunter College Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.5 or better.

3. Receive a grade of B or better in ENGL 12000.

4. Have no more than 6 cr. of CR/NC grades.

5. Formal declaration of a major in music.

6. Transfer students will have to complete 12 credits of coursework at Hunter College before applying. However, transfer students with 60 or more credits and a GPA of 3.3 or better may be immediately considered for admission.

Liberal Arts and Sciences Major Requirements

Requirements are the same as those for the 42-credit Music-BA  plus the following graduate-level courses: MUS 64100, MUS 64300, MUS 64500, MUS 64700, MUS 64900, MUS 65100, MUS 72400, MUS 75100, MUS 75200, MUS 77900, 3 cr. A minimum of 140 credits is required for this degree.

Liberal Arts and Sciences Distribution Requirements

These are courses required for School of Education students. Most of these courses may also be used toward the Common Core Requirements .

• 6 credits of English courses
• 6 credits of social studies (at least one course in U.S. history or U.S. geography)
• 6 credits of foreign language
• 12 credits in math, science, or technology with at least one science with a lab component. (A college course in calculus meets 6 credits of these requirements)

Academic Progress Standards

• Students must maintain a GPA of at least 3.5 and an education sequence index of at least 3.0.
• Any student who receives a grade of B-, C+, C or D in student teaching must apply to the department chairperson for permission to reregister for that course, which may be repeated only once.
• Any student who receives a grade of D+ or D in a course in the education sequence will be required to repeat that course. Students are permitted to repeat a course only once.
• Any student who receives a grade of F in any course in the pedagogical sequence (including student teaching) will not be permitted to continue in the program.
• Any student who has more than two grades of IN will be permitted to register for only one course the following semester
• Second Methods Course: Students will be permitted to register for the second methods course in their subject area only after having met the following requirements: Completion of 18 credits of study in the major subject area; approval of the major department adviser; and maintenance of an overall GPA of 3.5 and an education sequence index of 3.0.
• Take and pass the Educating All Students test (EAS) and the appropriate Content Specialty Test (CST) of the New York State Teacher Certification Exams prior to student teaching.
• Complete at least 21 credits in an approved Arts & Sciences major before student teaching.

School of Education Exit Standards

Students must meet the following criteria in order to graduate with a School of Education major or minor:

• Have an overall GPA of at least 3.0
• Complete the Dignity for All Students Act (DASA) anti-bullying workshop.  The DASA workshop is required for all students in a NYS certiifcation program at the School of Education. The workshop requires six clock hours of coursework or training.
