Foundational Courses


Foundational Courses must be completed before embarking upon the major. Students with appropriate background may be exempted from some or all Foundational Courses. See department for proper placement.

Hunter Core Requirement


Note: Several courses leading to (foundational) or within this major may fulfill parts of the Hunter Core Requirement (CUNY Common Core [CCC], Hunter Focus, Concurrent Requirements). When selecting courses, it may be to a student’s advantage to choose courses that count toward the Hunter Core Requirement and also advance the student on the path to the major. Offered within the interdepartmental archaeology major.

Preparation for Teaching in Grades 7-12


Students interested in a teaching career should consult with the School of Education . In addition, the department offers an MA in the teaching of Latin.

Honors and Tutorials


Departmental honors in classics and tutorials are open only to majors.

Minor in Classical Archaeology


12 Credits

  1.  CLA 20400 - Introduction to Classical, Near Eastern, and Egyptian Archaeology (W) 
  2.  CLA 22100 - Greek Archaeology (W) 
  3.  CLA 22200 - Roman Archaeology I: Etruscans, Monarchy, Republic (W) 
  4.  One other course in Classical Archaeology at the 200- or 300-level.

Note: CLA 20400  is a prerequisite for all other Classical Archaeology courses.
