This program prepares Childhood Education teachers to become better qualified in teaching mathematics and sciences in the elementary grades. This program requires initial NYS certification in Childhood Education and leads to professional certification in that area.

Admission Requirements
- Undergraduate degree with a GPA of at least 3.0.
- New York State initial professional or permanent certification in childhood education.
- Completion of a satisfactory writing sample as part of the application process.
- Two letters of recommendation including one from a supervisor.
- Successful completion with a grade of C or better of college level mathematics course and a lab science course. Those who do not meet the mathematics requirement must successfully complete MATH 104 and MATH 105 in the School of Arts and Sciences. Those who do not meet the science requirement must take a one semester course in a lab science (biology, chemistry, physics or geology.)
Course Waivers
- Master’s candidates may transfer in and/or waive up to three required courses in the master’s in mathematics and science education by providing evidence of prior equivalent coursework.
- An elective course must be substituted for a waived course with adviser’s approval.
- Waived courses provide an opportunity for teacher candidates to deepen their knowledge by taking advantage of the academic wealth available in the departments within the School of Education or the School of Arts and Sciences. Any graduate course(s) in either the School of Education or the School of Arts and Sciences for which prerequisites have been met may be substituted for waived courses with the permission of the program coordinator.
Progress Standards
- Students must maintain an overall GPA of 3.0, which includes courses in the arts and sciences subject as well as in teacher education, in order to continue the program.
- Students with more than one course grade below B in the first 12 credits will not be allowed to continue in the program.
- A student who receives a grade of F in any course including arts and sciences courses in the first 12 credits will not be allowed to continue in the program.
- Students with one grade of IN (Incomplete) within the first 12 credits are restricted from registering for more than one additional course. Those with two or more INs will not be allowed to register for any courses.

Exit Standards
- Overall GPA of 3.0 or better.
- Students must pass the School of Education technology assessment.
