COMMUNITY HEALTH BS

Community health majors use organizing, educational, media and technological skills along with a sound knowledge of public health to encourage, maintain and improve the health of people in diverse communities. They develop, implement and coordinate health interventions, communicate with a variety of publics about what constitutes good health, how to prevent disease and illness and how to secure treatment when needed.             

Community health majors are employed in community-based and human rights organizations, family planning clinics, mental health centers, homeless shelters, research centers, media organizations, as well as in city and state health departments. The BS degree in Community Health at Hunter pro­vides the background for positions in the field and the academic background to pursue gradu­ate education in public health, social work and related fields.


Fieldwork placements provide students with an opportunity to develop research skills and gain hands-on practice in community health.

Admission Requirements  

Admission into the COMHE major is competitive and students enter in the Fall semester only (no Spring admission). The prerequisites for admission into the COMHE major are:

  1. Completion of 60 credits at the time of admission
  2. A combined GPA of 3.0 from all postsecondary institutions attended
  3. submission of a 500 word essay
  4. Completion of the following courses:
    (a) one semester of introductory level statistics
    (b) one semester of English composition
    (c)  any lab-based course in the natural sciences
    (d) an intro-level course in sociology;
    (e) an additional intro level social science course in either psychology or anthropology
    (f) one upper level course in a social science (e.g. sociology, anthropology, psychology, political science, urban studies, women and gender studies, or human rights). Students are also encouraged to take a class in community, public or environmental health. Students may apply during the semester that they are completing prerequisites for the program. All applicants, including current Hunter College students, must apply for admission to the program.

Hunter Core Requirement


Several courses leading to or within this major may fulfill parts of the Hunter Core Requirement (CUNY Common Core [CCC], Hunter Focus, Concurrent Requirements). When selecting courses, it may be to a student’s advantage to choose courses that count toward the Hunter Core Requirement and also advance the student on the path to the major. Prerequisites


  • Must have completed sixty 60 credits at the time of enrollment
  • A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • English Composition (ENG 12000 - 3 cr.)
  • An introductory statistics class (STAT 11300  or STAT 21300  , PSYCH 24800  , SOC 24100  , ECO 22100  or equivalent- 3 cr.)
  • 3.0 credits or more of any lab science in the Natural Sciences (Preferred: ANTHP 10100  or ANTHP 10200  ; BIOL 10000  , BIOL 10200  or BIOL 16000  )
  • Intro to Sociology (  )- 3 cr.
  • 3 credits of intro level Psychology OR Anthropology (PSYCH 10000  ,   , ANTHC 10100 
  • 3 credits of any upper level course (at least 200 level) in the social sciences (e.g., anthropology, psychology, political science or sociology); or urban studies, women and gender studies, or human rights. (Note: The Stats prerequisite cannot meet this requirement.)
  • A course in Community Health (COMHE), Public Health, or Environmental Health
