Topics in optics related to lasers and optical fiber and devices for modulating and directing signals from such devices. Geometrical optics with emphasis on ray tracing. Matrix methods in optics. Lenses thick and thin, mirrors, prisms and other passive optical elements and systems. Propagation of light in materials. Dispersion and its effects. Special topics in geometric and wave optics. Laboratory complements classwork. prereq: PHYS 12000 or 12100 or equiv; MATH 12500 5 hrs 4 cr.
