The Brookdale Center for Healthy Aging improves the lives of older adults through research, policy and professional development.
Founded in 1974, by Dr. Rose Dobroff, the Center quickly took root and flourished. As one of the country’s first academic gerontology centers, Brookdale fostered a generation of professionals and paraprofessionals who serve older adults. With the addition of the Sadin Institute on Law and Public Policy, named for its founder Sam Sadin, Brookdale pioneered the field of elder law, nurturing many of the field’s top legal experts. For over four decades, Brookdale has remained a leader and innovator in an area of human services and public policy that has become increasingly relevant over the years.
Human services professionals, lawyers and other advocates continue to come to Brookdale to expand their knowledge and sharpen their skills. Brookdale trains the majority of public employees in New York State who provide protective services to vulnerable adults; operates an institute specifically for managers and aspiring supervisors; trains lawyers and others in the guardianship process; and runs a rigorous certificate program in geriatric care management – to name just a few examples.
From the Center’s location in East Harlem, staff are engaged in developing, implementing and evaluating cutting-edge programs and practices and disseminating those that work – such as daily money management services that protect elderly and disabled adults from financial exploitation and may enable them to remain at home instead of being placed in residential care facilities, and programs that neighborhood senior centers can offer to help people manage chronic health problems and improve their quality of life.
